I have thought long and hard about a community garden for Del Norte County residents. We have a diversity groups of people that we can each learn from one another on how to grow different herbs and vegetables. I thought the project would not cost more than $10,000. We will need to find an open area where the sun shines on in the morning and the sun still sets on it at the end of the day. I have looked in and out of Del Norte County, I thought Smith River would be the best area to have the community garden, if we could find that open area. It is not too far out of town, it is easy to access it. We need tools, equipments, water hoses, pipes, etc. this could be a one year project or a continue project if we have funds. I just thought that, together, we could make this project possible.

Border Idea: Sending the Right Message

Today I drove by the border area and a thought occurred to me: what would it mean to visitors who stop there? They’re already on the Wild Rivers Coast--they’ve been on it a while. A sign/object/work of art announcing it might be rather strange. Visitors might wrongly interpret it as a dividing line rather than a connecting link. Sort of like a “The End. Thanks, Come Again.” I don’t think we mean to do that. We want to show a connection--not a division.

I say this not to negate the idea, but in the hopes that, if we choose this idea, we can clearly communicate the message, “Hey! You’ve been on the Wild Rivers Coast for a while and even though you’ve crossed a border, you’re still here and there’s good stuff ahead!”

I mentioned this to my husband, and he suggested we do something at the CC Airport, a first entry point rather than a middle of the journey stop. I’m not sure how I feel about that yet, but I’m putting it out there.

I think I got a little carried away with the smileys, but I couldn’t help myself.
