Alternatives to Gasoline: Conevening Interested Stakeholders to Find Creative Solutions

We all feel the pinch at the pumps and in our pocket books--now what are we going to do about it? Alone, I don’t have the resources, time or know-how to create alternatives to simply adding petrol to my Subaru and trying to drive less. Together, we might have some great ideas and be able to actually implement them. There are so many alternatives out there right now--and I don’t know much about any of them. But I bet you do! We have ethanol, natural gas, vegetable oil, bio-diesel… we have car pooling, community pick-up routes for groceries/mail, and some creative group transportation options…

I am wondering what solutions you might have thought about--what ideas you have that given a little collaborative gusto might actually be a boon for your community?

Re: Judy Keen’s Article

This really exemplifies the how difficult it is for Rural people to access resources available in more populated areas. Rising fuel prices mean that it’s more expensive to ship everything--food, clothing, building materials etc. I think the unspoken message of Keen’s article is that we must find a way to provide resources, generate energy and create goods locally in rural communities. The price of fuel will force rural people to be the forerunners in alternative energy, and push them to make and grow local goods for their own communities. Those changes not only help find a solution to surviving the rising fuel prices, but also have a beneficial impact on local economies and the global environment.
