Thank you Liz for your reminder of the important role that EOU can play in the Rural Tourism arena. I will be very interested in further discussing this topic with you and plan a close collaboration to best serve our communities.
See you soon. Maurizio

Hello, all~

Eastern Oregon University is the only public university in Oregon with a mandate to serve rural communities.  As such, I thought that you might be interested in an Educational Tourism opportunity that has been ongoing for over 20 years.  That’s sustainability!

EOU has 15 outreach centers throughout Oregon, with many in rural communities (e.g, Baker City, Burns, Coos Bay, John Day, Roseburg).  College credit courses are offered onsite in many of these communities, often in a two day, one-weekend format.  As an example, this year in Baker County, we hosted a Geology of Gold Mining (GEOL 106) course in October, and will host a Visual Culture & Museums (ANTH 410) course in April.  Students and instructors travel to the hosting site to attend, usually spending one or two nights in the area.

Perhaps your community would like to “recruit” an EOU onsite course to your community next year?  If so, I would be happy to provide EOU Center Director contact information for your area, or you can access a linkable contact list by geographic area at http://www.eou.edu/dde/regional.html
